It’s true that the lack of the best players was the main cause for it being dropped, but the IOC also referred to baseball as a regional sport with limited global interest. Would the NPB have paused their season if the Olympics hadn’t been in Tokyo? That’s debatable. And telling them that they can’t represent their countries would seem to be somewhat draconian, and even cruel. The very fact that players like Trout and Ohtani want to play for ‘national pride’ ought to tell you something. That’s especially true when there is no other international stage where they can represent their countries. You can try to diminish ‘national pride’, but it clearly exists, and has meaning for many players. Saying the WBC is a “meaningless tournament that just hinges on “national pride” is a one-sided pejorative, with biased intent. So eliminating the WBC is not going to help bring baseball back to the Olympics. Spreading that appeal is a goal of the WBC. The IOC considers baseball to have only regional appeal. 202o was probably an exception given that it’s the most popular sport in Japan, but it looks like baseball won’t be played going forward. It was brought back for the 2020 games in Tokyo, after not being included since 2012. Ignorant Son-of-a-b, In case you hadn’t noticed, the sport of baseball is no longer played in the Olympic Games. Or keep crying about how meaningless it was for Diaz to play in the WBC…. Anyone calling one meaningless but the other not meaningless needs to realize you’re not the center of the universe and recognize it’s all a matter of perspective. Some of you have a horrible ability to view something from another perspective. No more meaningless than you think it is for Diaz to suit up for the Mets instead. You think the citizens of Puerto Rico think it was meaningless for Diaz to suit up for their team? I doubt it. One carries as much significance as the other depending on which league you prefer to watch. In the grand scheme of things the world is really no different regardless who wins the World Series or the WBC. Ok well that’s a poor counter argument if so. In b4 “because MLB matters to me and the WBC doesn’t” counter argument…. Obviously this went way over your head though. How is MLB more meaningful? All it is is games being played to be enjoyed. If the WBC is meaningless then I can easily make the argument MLB is meaningless too. Baseball is entertainment and nothing more. That marked the largest commitment to a relief pitcher in MLB history. The Mets retained him this offseason on a five-year, $102MM contract days before the start of free agency. He’s coming off one of the greatest relief seasons in recent memory, throwing 62 innings of 1.31 ERA ball while striking out more than half his opponents. The 28-year-old righty is the sport’s best reliever. Needless to say, a serious injury to Díaz would be a massive blow for the Mets. Andy Martino of SNY tweets that he also went in for x-rays on Wednesday night. Marly Rivera of ESPN tweets that Díaz was evaluated at the stadium by an on-site orthopedic specialist. Obviously, it’s far too soon to know the extent of the injury. Players from both teams were visibly distraught by the injury, with Díaz’s younger brother Alexis Díaz breaking down in tears as Edwin was taken off the field. He was helped into a wheelchair and taken off the field in a surreal scene, one which turned from jubilation for the Puerto Rican players and fanbase into dismay. The Mets announced he’s going for further imaging on Thursday.ĭíaz was helped off the field by trainers without putting weight on his right leg. The Mets closer threw a perfect inning to save Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic and injured his right knee while the team celebrated its victory on the mound ( video provided by Fox Sports MLB). Star reliever Edwin Díaz was carted off the field after tonight’s World Baseball Classic contest.
